April 22, 2012 marks the celebration of the Earth Day. It is being
celebrated since 1970 in response to the call of increased global
awareness about the negative effects that people are experiencing and
witnessing to the earth, brought about by the modern changes that
actually take place in the planet. Everyone is being encouraged to have
an active participation, supporting ways that the environment can be
protected and saved from the harmful products and activities that can
damage our world widely. What are some of the positive actions that we
can do in order to help our environment? Check this list, and spread
this simple campaign.
10. Use Non-Toxic Cleaning Products
Use natural and safe cleaning products which do not contain toxic
ingredients that could harm not just the environment, but people as
well. Use products that you already have at home such as baking soda,
water, and vinegar.
9. Maintain Bathroom Basics
Instead of using shower bath, you could opt for a regular bath using a
pale of water and a dipper. This way, you could regulate the water that
you would use, and at the same time, conserve it. The same application
applies when you are brushing your teeth, using a glass of water instead
of turning your faucet on wherein you would waste more than just 5 to
10 glasses of water because of its continuous flow.
8. Use Shopping Bags
There are countries that are advocate in the implementation of the
use of shopping bags, instead of the modern plastic bags when you do
your shopping. When I mean shopping bags, these are cloth and string
types of bags.
7. Adjustment of Temperature
Individuals should be responsible in adjusting and setting room
temperature using air-conditioning if it’s summer, heater if it’s
winter, and ceiling fans at home when room temperature is neutral. It
also applies to refrigerators but the approach is different, which is to
clean the condenser annually to make it functional and set it at 10
degrees in order to save 25% of energy.
6. Drying Off the Clothes
Despite of the availability of washer and dryer, it is physically
healthy and economic to do hand washing using cold water in a full-load
of clothes. Dry it off in the air could even cool down the temperature
of the surroundings because of the water that it releases to the air.
5. Make Correct Food Selections
As one support natural products in the market, which are not
processed, we could avoid less productions and demands of processed
products in grocery stores.
4. Promote Other Means of Transportation
There are countries that actually implement manual transportation
through bikes and walking. You could shed off unwanted pounds and
decrease traffic on the road.
3. Choose Energy Savers
Stop using incandescent light bulbs, but start using LEDs. Are we
aware that incandescent light bulbs contribute to the polluting
emissions that most of the industrial and power plants generate? You
could use fluorescent light bulbs since they are much efficient because
it lasts longer, consumes lesser electricity, while providing quality
light output.
2. Wise Shopping
It’s wise that you buy in bulk and make sure that you really need
them. This would avoid further disposal or waste of food, which at
times, is being thrown away somewhere. It would avoid an increase of
industrial waste.
1. Apply Three R’s
This is the most important environmental campaign that could be
easily remembered. These are reduce, reuse, and recycle. Reduce wastes
being thrown in the environment by reducing too much packaging. Reuse
the things that you feel you could still use or give them to charity.
Identify things that can be recycled such as paper bags, cartons, and
tin cans. You could produce new things by being creative.
