Can you fancy of something more horrendous than an airplane crash? I
don’t possibly think so, may be, a ship drowning in the sea is also very
fearful to many of you. Airplane crashes owing to different reasons as
incompetency of the cabin crew or due to some technical failure of the
airplane because the tech engineer didn’t check the airplane
satisfactorily. As a whole, an airplane crash is so devastating and
deadly that there are very fewer chances of surviving this one. At this
point, I would like to give you some interesting information before
moving on to the top ten list of fatal crashes. An accident in which the
damage to the aircraft is such that the plane is destroyed is called a
hull loss accident
10. Korean Air Lines flight KL007
This incident took place on September 1, 1983 because of the lack of
alertness and sharpness of the cabin crew. This plane was shot down by
Soviet Union because somehow the place managed to drift into the Soviet
airspace and the pilot didn’t notice this thing. This carelessness of
the pilot came to be very expensive for all the passengers. This 747 was
carrying 269 passengers and it was shot down near Sakhalin Island in
the North Pacific.
9. Pan American flight 103
On December 21, 1988 this plane blew up in Lockerbie, Scotland
killing 270 people and two Libyan agents were allegedly held responsible
for this incident.
8. American Airlines DC-10
This crash occurred on May 25, 1979 on the American soil when the
engine detached and caused the disruption in the functioning of one of
the wings. The airplane rolled by 90 degrees and turned into a fireball
just a mile away from the Chicago’s O’Hare airport. This crash resulted
in 273 fatalities.
7. Airbus A300
It is really painful when you shoot down a commercial airliner taking
it as a hostile military plane. Yes, this is what happened over the
Straits of Hormuz by the US Navy destroyer Vincennes. None of the
persons on board survived at all. This incident took place on July 3,
1988
6. Saudia L-1011
On August 19, 1980, due to an in-flight fire and not taking
precautionary measures this incident took place and resulted in the
death of 301 people. Though, after taking cognizance of the fire the
plane was made to be stopped at the far end of the runway but there was
there was no evacuation commenced by the flight crew and by that time
the passenger cabin was consumed by a flash-fire.
5. Air India 747
Air India 747 en route between Toronto and Bombay, on June 23, 1985,
was blown up by a Sikh extremist. Authorities attribute this fatal
incident to the inefficiencies of luggage screening which didn’t detect
the bomb in one of the bags. The airplane fell into the sea east of
Ireland killing 329.
4. THY (Turkish Airlines) DC-10
It is very deplorable that a poorly designed cargo door was the main
cause of this crash. On March 3, 1974, DC-10 crashed near the Orly
airport resulting in the death of 346 passengers and crew members. The
cargo door burst from its latches and the plane spiraled out of control
and crashed into the woods of northeast of Paris.
3. Ilyushin IL-76 cargo plane
It was a head-on collision between the Ilyushin IL-76 cargo plane and
a Saudia 747 near Delhi. The responsibility of this tragic event lies
on the shoulders of the cargo plane from Kazakhstan as it didn’t follow
the instructions. This event occurred on November 12, 1996.
2. Japan Air Lines 747
This time it was the fault of the tech crew which is supposed to
check the plane thoroughly and do proper repairs of the plane parts if
there is any problem. The rupture of an aft bulkhead destroyed a part of
airplane’s tail and it rendered the plane uncontrollable. The crash
took place near Mt. Fuji after taking off from Tokyo on a domestic
flight killing 520. This incident took place on August 12, 1985
1. Boeing 747
Owing to a foggy weather, on March 27, 1977, two Boeing 747s collided
with one another while running on the same runway. These two Boeing
were operated by KLM and Pan Am. KLM departed without instructions and
this resulted in the loss of 583 precious lives. It was possibly a
communication failure and blockage of radio transmissions.
