An old adage says that “There is always room for improvement”
and it encompasses not just to people that we commonly see who are
doing most of the mistakes in life or those who have bad behavior and
attitude toward others. It is best to make a self-assessment or
self-evaluation in all aspects of your life. This is called
self-improvement, which entails not just the attitude of the individual,
but it also includes the intellectual, emotional, economical, and
psychological aspect of a person. There are various tools that would
serve as a channel to recognize them and admit that you have to change
things. Affirmatively, there is nothing permanent in this world but
change. It connotes positive transformation on yourself and not just
because people see you their way and you want to please them. Remember,
it’s all about you and not just what others think about you because when
you think that way, you would just go back in the same pace and you
will never change a bit. Here are the things that would best help you as
you start to improve yourself and how you would be consistent in
achieving it and not just beginning with it.
10. Self-Meditation
There are many people in history who have reached self-awakening and
realization because they have thought about everything just like Mahatma
Gandhi. This is an important aspect in everyone’s life. This should be
the turning point. This is the time where you start recognizing that you
have done wrong and made wrong decisions in the past. It is wise that
you do it far from your comfort zone. Go in a faraway place to avoid
further confusion and creating unnecessary clouds in your mind.
9. Write THEM NOW
Through meditation, your mind will be clearer. You will get to know
all the sins and mistakes that you have committed. Get a notebook. Write
everything, not just the negative things that you have made, whether if
it has something to do with your attitude, the way you handle the
financial aspects, relationship with your family, and even your
commitment towards your work or school. You do not need to go in detail
but you have to write the things that creates problem to you personally,
which affects other people.
8. Identify the Easiest Going to the Toughest
The next thing that you have to do is to identify the smallest
problems up to the biggest dilemmas about yourself. If it is possible,
you could rank them from one to ten or if you have 20 on your list, at
least focus on the first ten then work from the least going to the
toughest.
7. Make a to-do-list
This is the detailed part. This is where the “how” comes in. For
example, if the least thing that you have in your list is your patience
then what kind of situation that you feel that you are being provoked to
react and do things which are not appropriate? The next thing that you
can do using your “to-do” list is to write down your antidotes. For
example, I would sing a happy song if I feel I am pissed wherein
from that, you could write down happy songs that you can memorize and
sing when annoying situations come in. The rest of the “to do” list
would follow in each of your list.
6. Set the date
Any goal is achievable if you know when you would do it. You do not
just think about it and say you will do it but you have to be clearer if
it is today, tomorrow, or next year. This is associated with #7 goals
because it has complete details of how you would do it.
5. DO it now
Most of the people, whenever before the New Year comes in,
individuals would have a New Year’s resolution list and when the end of
the year has come, you would hear the same old story, old problems, and
same complaints that they have about themselves. Was it done? Did they
start correcting it? The answer is no. Real results come when action is
seen.
4. Evaluate
This is the important follow-up that you can do for yourself. You
have to evaluate yourself honestly, if you have improved or not. Pick up
your notebook and your to-do list and grade yourself if you were able
to accomplish what you have written on your commotion list. If not, you
may ask yourself “What have I done wrong? What have I lacked?” Once
you realized what you have missed something then repeat numbers 9 to 5
again and you will see if you are heading to your goal.
3. Ask Feedback from Others
Of course, there are things that you could not just observe yourself.
You may ask informally your friends during casual talks about yourself.
It’s wise that you start with your family since they would be the ones
who could tell you straightly as to what kind of person you are. Include
what you have gotten as you do your re-evaluation. Also, ask your
closest friends and even employers if you are working, if one of the
areas that you are working is work related.
2. Be Consistent
This is the most important step that people overlook. They would just
start great on something but when they feel that they are accustomed to
it, consistency decreases and later on, the old habit goes back to life
and nothing has changed. Consistency requires patience, time, and
effort. You cannot do it in a week or a month. In fact, it takes your
lifetime to make sure that you are changing. It does not mean that you
have to be perfect. It means that you want to be a better person not
just for yourself but also for others.
1. Do Not Procrastinate
At the end of the day, it is you who would decide. You should not
weigh that you cannot do it now because your situation is very much
complicated. For example, you are not good in handling your finances and
you tend to spend too much. Would you change that when the time comes
that you cannot work anymore and you are too old to be employed?
Procrastination is the primary hindrance to everyone in achieving
self-improvement. It is not to be done tomorrow. It should happen
today. Here
